Basements have a reputation for being dark, dingy, and gloomy. However, you can do plenty of things to turn the dark and gloomy into something bright and cheery. You can make the place brighter with lights or paint your walls with refreshing colors.
But did you know you can add freshness and beauty to your basement without spending on lights and paint? With the help of plants, you can easily infuse some greenery into the basement.
Basements can become stuffy and musty, thanks to their location in the house. With little to no windows or ventilation, air circulation and air quality can be poor. Conversely, plants provide oxygen and filter the air, making them great natural air purifiers and cleaners for your basement.
According to research, it’s found that indoor plants can help boost productivity and reduce stress from being in a windowless environment. Plants are perfect if you transform your basement into a study room or home office.
Adding plants can naturally improve the beauty and aesthetics around them. Their green color and association with nature provide a calming and soothing effect. And who doesn’t want to be in a place that is beautiful and comfortable? By adding plants, you beautify your basement and make it cozy and less dreary.
It’s no secret that plants thrive in places where they can get ample amounts of sunlight, and the basement is one of the places in your home that receives little to no sunlight. So, how can you possibly use plants to brighten up your basement room?
Well, don’t worry because, in this blog, we’ll discuss plants that can thrive in areas like your basement!
This tropical plant is also known as the Corn Plant. It can survive and thrive in low-light environments, preferring indirect or filtered light. It can also live to the fullest in low temperatures, provided the temperature doesn’t go below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though they grow slowly, keep in mind that they can grow tall, ranging from 3 to 14 feet. So, if you have a small space, consider its smaller and compact variety, such as Compacta.
This succulent shrub is often referred to as the Jade Plant. It thrives in direct sunlight for more than six hours. But it can also survive in areas with indirect light and only requires at least 2 hours of direct sunlight daily. In their native habitat in Southern Africa, these succulents can grow up to six feet tall, but as indoor plants, they grow slowly.
The Jade Plant prefers cool environments at temperatures around 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit for daytime and between 50 to 55 degrees for nighttime. During winter, as long as there are no drafts and their leaves don’t touch the cold glass panes, they’re as happy as can be.
Nicknamed the Cast Iron Plant, this hardy plant is perfect for your basement room. It can tolerate low light, cool temperatures, and irregular watering. It can handle two hours of direct sunlight a day or less, preferring locations away from the windows. So stairs, corners, and, of course, basements are the perfect location for this plant.
Cast Iron Plants can also withstand low temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So, if your basement is cooler than the average basement temperature, this plant is for you.
Popularly known as the Snake Plant. This plant is considered a favorite because it can live almost anywhere as long as you don’t water them too much. They prefer a daily dose of direct sunlight for two to six hours and temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite that, they are considered hardy plants that can live anywhere, even at temperatures below 50 degrees.
A popular variety of the Snake Plant is the Bird’s Nest Snake Plant or Hahnii. Other than having the traits of the Snake Plant, it only grows at less than a foot tall. This variety is the perfect choice if you have a small space or want to put one on your windowsill or coffee table.
Many things are associated with basements, but colorful, bright, and full of life aren’t the descriptions you often hear about them. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Your basement doesn’t have to stay gloomy. Breathe life into your basement with the help of these plants and create a better basement experience.
